In which G.M. Norton adds to his burgeoning shoe collection.
As regular readers will attest, I love my shoes. Last
week, I took delivery of a new pair.
I can almost hear you now, “Norton, old thing.
You don’t need any more shoes!”
Well, yes. Yes, I do.
You see, a pair of monk strap shoes has been missing
from my collection. Thankfully, the good chaps at Samuel Windsor sensed my plight and rectified the situation by sending me a pair from their classic collection.
Currently on sale at £32.50, with the
all-important Goodyear Welt, they are a bit of a bargain.
I love the mirror-like shine. The leather is
durable and the shoes feel more expensive than they are, closer to the full
retail price of £100.
What’s more, they’re very comfortable.
One of the more rakish of shoe styles, I’m
looking forward to stepping out in these beauties. With a rubber heel with the leather sole, they will take a little more abuse than an all-leather arrangement.
For those not up on their shoe terminology, as you
can see, monk shoes feature a buckle and strap, rather than lacing. Single and
double monk shoes are both available, with these particular ones featuring the lone buckle. And yes, monk strap shoes do in fact take
their origin from monks, who found them more comfortable than sandals.
I should also confirm, no monks were harmed in the making of these shoes. I'm pleased to be able to put your mind at ease.G.M. Norton

My husband says that he had a pair at the time when Bros made the style popular!! He never has enough shoes either...
ReplyDeleteWill look forward to seeing what you team them with! x
Ah Bros, my older female cousins adored them but I was never a fan so used to wind them up. I remember they started a bottle top craze but wasn't aware of their association with the monks. I paired the shoes with my grey double-breasted suit on Friday, they seem quite versatile!
